Chapter 15

After Ry dropped her off at home, Indi strode straight to the bathroom and pulled off his shirt and dropped it to the floor. She stood naked before the vanity mirror to stare at a woman she wasn’t sure she recognized anymore.

She could just see the tops of the clear, iridescent wings over her shoulders. They didn’t move, but they had made reflexive movements when she pulled off the shirt.

Why was this happening to her?

Or was that the wrong question to ask? It had already happened. She needed to know if they were merely temporary or if she’d have to adjust to having them for the rest of her life.

Wincing, she reached for the hand mirror on the vanity. She turned around and held the mirror high. There were two sets of wings on each side of her spine. They resembled bee wings. The top one was a little larger than the narrower bottom wing. And they grew from her back in a narrow jut and formed a sort of elongated teardrop in shape. They were clear, and looked like delicate paper that could be easily torn if pierced or even bumped. A twist at her waist caught the light in the fabric of the wings and flashed in pinks, blues, emeralds and a deep violet.

Indi sighed. They were pretty. But they did not belong on her.

Sucking in the corner of her lower lip, she wondered how she would ever disguise them. They were already about a foot long. And she hadn’t even had them twenty-four hours. Would they grow as large as a real faery’s wings? How big were a faery’s wings? She’d never be able to hide them if they stretched many feet beyond her body.

Real faeries could put away their wings, yes?

“I have no clue,” she muttered. “Is that what I am? Could I really be...?”

She couldn’t say the word: changeling. It felt wrong. Not at all like anything that belonged in the comfortable world she knew as her home.

Picking up her phone, she googled changeling. The first definition that came up read: “a child believed to have been secretly substituted by faeries for the human parents’ real child in infancy.”

The entries that followed were similar, yet they were all linked to folklore and myth.

“Not real,” she whispered.

And yet proof glimmered just behind her shoulders.

Her phone suddenly rang and it startled Indi so much she almost dropped it. Janet was calling? It had to be middle of the night in New York. Or...maybe early morning. It was past noon here.

“Janet!”

“Hey, chickie baby, what’s up?”

“Oh, the usual.” She bit the corner of her lip. Ry said she couldn’t tell anyone about this. And why was her hand suddenly shaking?

“Oh, yeah? How did the date with tall, dark and billionaire go last night?”

“Great. You know I’m in my element at fancy balls.”

“Hence, your business. But I don’t care about what you wore or if you chatted up the movers and shakers.”

Indi pressed her shaking fingers to the vanity and leaned forward, eyeing herself in the mirror.
